FOR Merthyr manager Garry Shephard it is now about finishing the season with one more victory after an experimental formation comfortably despatched Portishead.

Two goals from youth team starlet Joe Leahy and an accomplished display from another youth team member, Adam Thomas, were the only real highlights on a day when the result was never really in any doubt.

“We decided to play three at the back just as an experiment and we did OK,” commented Shephard afterwards.

“Having said that, we will probably go back to our usual 4-4-2 on Saturday because we want to finish on a high,” he continued.

Marcus Griffiths gave Merthyr a half-time lead from the penalty spot before Leahy got his first on 55 minutes and then Scott Armitage added a third.

Clive Holder scored a consolation goal for the home side before Leahy scored the goal of the game after 78 minutes involving four-man move.

Merthyr finish the campaign with the visit of Bridport, who are likely to join Merthyr in the Premier Division next season.
